Jermain Defoe equalled a Barclays Premier League record with five goals as Tottenham Hotspur sent out a powerful statement of intent to their rivals for a top-four place by crushing Wigan Athletic 9-1 yesterday.
The striker scored a hat-trick in seven minutes — the second-fastest in Premier League history — and is the first player to score five in a single game since Alan Shearer for Newcastle United in 1999.
Eight of Tottenham’s goals — and all of Defoe’s — came in the second half in the joint second-largest winning margin in Premier League history, after Manchester United’s 9-0 victory over Ipswich Town in March 1995. [+]
